Welcome to The Process of Avoiding Splinters

1-1/8” Walnut and Marble Dinner Hearth

Welcome to the Home of handmade “Serving Trays” and “Dinner Hearth’s”. I make trays based on the type of wood, below is 1-1/4” Walnut, and the grain pattern along with the stone top at hand. The side view below offers a nice tight grain from the edge of the wood.

While the top view gives off more color the pattern is evident in the grain. I’ve learned ( the hard way), not to risk rushing in to make a top surface dado surface for the stone. The grain tends to lean toward one of the edges which is critical to avoid cutting the initial lines because the splintering effect has taken too many pieces off my shelf.

The art of hand made woodcraft is evident in the creators talent and experience of the craftsperson. Personally, I’ve spent many hours trying to avoid the splintering effect. Some readings on woodgrain brought the obvious to my attention.
I’m now much more aware of the wood and it’s natural grain in the process of making my edges clean. I still feel the tension needed to make accurate grain cuts but know why I might run in error. Announcing a return to handmade crafts is an honor I aspire to excel in, with the right amount of patience I will succeed.
